SAN JOSE, Calif. - UH rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit but eventually fell short to San Jose State, 54-49, in overtime Saturday night at the Event Center. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the WAC following its first road game of the season.
Amber Jackson scored five of her game-high 23 points in the extra period and Lamisha Augustine scored the final four points of the game for the Spartans (9-4, 2-1 WAC) to seal the win. Augustine finished with 16 points.
Jade Abele and Alofa Toiaivao each scored 12 points for the Rainbow Wahine, while Janevia Taylor recorded her second double-double of the year with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine lost despite a valiant comeback effort. Regulation was a tale of two halves. UH led for nearly the entire first half and built a lead as many as eight points. San Jose State however, ended the half with a 12-2 run and Jessica Kellogg's bucket with 12 seconds left gave the Spartans their first lead of the game, 20-18, going into the locker room.
UH trailed for nearly the entire second half. After taking a brief lead, Hawaii fell behind by nine points, 41-32, as the Spartans went on a 10-0 run. The Rainbow Wahine wouldn't fold and held the Spartans to just one field goal in the final 7:30.
Abele's free throw with 55 seconds tied the score at 43-43 and when the Spartans turned the ball over on their next possession, the Rainbow Wahine found themselves with the ball and an opportunity to steal the road win. However, Taylor's jumper from the top of the key was off the mark and the game went into overtime, UH's second of the season.
The lead changed hands six times in overtime until the Spartans scored the final six points. Linsday Harris' jumper with 2:08 left put the Spartans up for good, 50-49 and Augustine finished off the Rainbow Wahine with four straight points. The loss was UH's fourth straight to San Jose State.
UH will remain on the mainland for two more road games. The Rainbow Wahine next travel to Dallas, Texas to face SMU on Thursday, January 13. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CST.
