Rainbow Wahine Newcomers Tested at Chaminade Invitational

LAIE, Oahu - The Hawai'i women's cross country team finished fourth in its first meet of the 2004-05 season - the Chaminade Invitational - Saturday, on the campus of Brigham Young-Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine competed against Hawai'i's four Division II teams at the 5K event.

Head coach Carmyn James used this meet as a training event for the Rainbow Wahine newcomers. Only seven Rainbow Wahine competed and none of the top performers from last season's squad participated.

Sophomore Sharlene Carillo finished 11th overall with a time of 21:34 to lead all UH runners. Sophomore Chelsee Pummel and freshman Ashley Monfort came in at 18th and 19th, with times of 22:54 and 22:55, respectively. Following closely behind was freshman Jessica Rohr (23:06) and sophomore Jamie Stephens (23:13).

BYUH won the event with five of its qualifiers finishing among the top seven runners. BYUH's Chelsea Smith led the pack with a time of 17:52, nearly a minute and a half ahead of teammate Diana Choi (19:19), who finished second.

The other Hawai'i runners who competed in the event were Allegra Erisman (24:01) and Haunani Bertelmann (DNF).

The Rainbow Wahine next compete in the UH-Hilo Invitational, Sept. 11, on the Vulcan campus.
