HILO, Hawai'i - The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team improved on its fourth place finish in last week's season-opening meet to finish second in the UH-Hilo Invitational, Saturday, on the Vulcan campus. Head coach
Carmyn James used her "B" team, which included the top four finishers in last week's Chaminade Invitational and sophomores
Chantelle Laan and
Danielle Binns, who made their season debuts.
Laan, UH's top finisher in three meets last season, finished second overall behind BYUH's Chelsea Smith (17:46). Laan recorded a time of 19.28 in the 5K event, while Binns followed closely behind at 20:03 to place fifth.
The competition featured the state's four Division II teams along with the Rainbow Wahine. BYUH won for the second consecutive week as five of its finishers ranked among the top nine runners.
"We are very pleased with the progress of the team," James said. "We are looking forward to showing off our "A" team in next weekend's Big Wave Invitational."
