LBSU Homers Past UH, 3-1, in Malihini Title Game

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i fell to Long Beach State today, 3-1, in the championship game of the 4th Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i drops to 15-13 on the season and 6-3 in the tourney. Long Beach State goes to 17-4 and a perfect 7-0 mark in the tourney.

UH took the lead in the first inning when Denise Dahlberg singled to center, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on Stacey Ritter's single to left.

LBSU tied the game in the fourth when shortstop Arleigh Thorp drove a 1-1 pitch over the left center field fence off Shannon Tabion (10-2).

In the sixth, LBSU took the lead for good. Tiffanie Wedell led off with an infield single to deep short and moved to second on Colleen Burdick's sacrifice bunt. The big blow came when Lauren Johnson lifted a 1-0 pitch deep over the left field wall to cap the scoring.

Hawaii hosts Southern Illinois one game on Tuesday, March 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at the RWSS.
