HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i was eliminated this afternoon by Tennessee, 4-1, in the 8th Hawai'i Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH placed third with an even 3-3 record this weekend.
UT's Monica Abbott (5-0) knocked off UH for the second day in a row. She threw a perfect game against UH yesterday and limited the UH offense to only two hits today.
The Lady Vols (5-1) opened up the scoring in the first off UH starter Melissa Coogan as Lindsay Schutzler led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a ground out, and came home on Lauren Mattox's single.
Coogan lasted only 3.1 innings allowing three hits and walked four. Paula Blanning (0-1) entered the game in the fourth with two runners at first and second and shut the door on the Lady Vols until the seventh.
UH picked up its first hit off the freshman southpaw in the third when UT second baseman Mandie Fishback lost Stacey Ritter's popup in the sun.
The Rainbow Wahine finally got their first run across on Abbott after being shutout for the last 12-straight innings. In the sixth, UT shortstop Katherine Card misplayed Tracie Uchima's popup into a two-base error. Noelle Izumi then sacrificed Uchima to third where she scored on a passed ball.
Tennessee added three runs in the seventh to seal the victory. UT sent eight batters to the plate, but UH committed two costly errors that led to three unearned runs. UH's Shannon Tabion came on and recorded the final three outs.
Hawai'i fell to 3-3 on the season and ended up in third place in the tourney. Tennessee improved to 5-1 and advanced to the championship game against Oregon State.
Hawai'i heads to the mainland next week for two weeks playing at the UNLV Rebel Classic and Campbell/Cartier Tournament hosted by San Diego State. Sandwiched between is a road doubleheader at Loyola Marymount.
