UH Overpowers Cal State Hayward, 14-2

STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine water polo team posted its second consecutive win, Thursday night, with an impressive 14-2 victory over the Cal State Hayward Pioneers at the University of the Pacific's Chris Kjeldsen Pool.

In two all-time meetings between the schools, the Rainbow Wahine (2-0, 1-0 MPSF) have defeated the Pioneers (1-1) by a combined score of 30-4.

Senior driver Rilea Stober established new career highs with three goals and three steals, leading an offensive barrage that had five Rainbow Wahine contributing two or more goals. Freshman Jessica Floyd made an impressive debut at two-meter with two goals and two steals, aiding senior eanna Hahn's seven save effort in goal.

The first half was marked by total defensive dominance on the part of the Rainbow Wahine, as starters Kristy Bagnall and Beth Novick collected two goals each by halftime. Led by junior driver Danielle Mulford's three ejection-draws, UH played much of the opening half on the power play, keeping the Pioneers scoreless and creating an 8-0 halftime margin.

The Rainbow Wahine were relentless in the second half, and didn't give up the Pioneer's first goal until 1:58 left in the third quarter. Floyd's third goal off of senior Tamara Molina's third assist of the match, put an exclamation point on the team's 12-point margin.

"It was a great way to start the season," head coach Michel Roy said. "The team showed their depth in this game, and the balanced effort paid off."

The Rainbow Wahine have no time to rest as they face California, Friday, Feb. 6, at 4:30 p.m. PST. UH looks to break through against the Golden Bears, whom they have never defeated in 10 tries.
