KANEOHE, Oahu - The Hawai'i women's cross country team captured the UH Coed-Sprint Invitational, Saturday morning, at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The victory was the Rainbow Wahine's second championship in a meet which they played hosts this season.
Hawai`i placed five runners among the top seven finishers, including freshman Sabrina Reeve, who finished second overall with a time of 14:34. Reeve led a UH contingent which finished Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 and posted 21 points in the 4K event. Reeve's time was also the fastest 4K time of the season for the Rainbow Wahine.
Chelsea Smith of Brigham Young-Hawai`i, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, once again proved her dominance among the state's top runners, winning the race in 14:24.
Sophomore Dana Buchanan placed third (14:57) followed by Chantelle Laan (15:09) and Kelly Young (15:35). Danielle Binns rounded out the UH qualifying team in seventh at 15:55.
"Amongst our team, it was a very competitive race as team trials for the WAC Championships was up for grabs," head coach Carmyn James said. "Nobody has holding back and everyone was vying for a spot on that team. As a team, they worked well together on the course, but at the same time it was an individual race."
James said UH's top seven finishers would make up the team which will participate in the WAC Championships, Oct. 30, in Ruston, La. Also qualifying for that squad was Sheena Thain (16:04, 9th) and Sharlene Carillo (16:19, 15th).
The event was an unusual competition as the women and men started at the same time. However the men ran a 5K race which was won by Brigham Young-Hawai‘i. Seasider Jacob Rushton took home men’s individual honors with a time of 16:17.
Earlier this year, the Rainbow Wahine captured the Big Wave Invitational also held at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
