The Warriors Handily Beat Alum, 3-0

Fans who showed up at the Stan Sheriff Center were given a treat Friday night as Warrior alumni showed the young Warrior's that youth does not easily prevail over age and experience. The Warriors needed just one hour and twenty minutes to beat their older counter parts, 30-18, 30-25, 30-28. But the Warrior alum did not let the Warriors win too easily.

In game one the alumni jumped to a 6-3 lead and held their own against the young Warriors. The Warriors quickly gained the lead and made it 9-6 and a pair of kills by Jose Delgado meant a 10-6 lead and a dominating presence on the court. But a kill from Dejan Miladinovic showed the Warriors the alumni were still in the game and not going to give up without a fight. Setter Brian Beckwith's tip over the net gave the Warrior's game one, 30-18.

In game two the Warriors and alumni battled for each point. At 7-8 Aaron Wilton's kill tied it up but the Warriors answered back with point of their own. Later in the game Tony Ching's kill for the alumni made it 12 all as the Warriors and alum see-sawed back and forth for the lead. Beckwith gave the Warriors game point and Delano Thomas in his new role at outside hitter put the ball down to give the Warriors a win.

The Warriors firmly took control of the third match jumping to a 4-2 lead. Maulia LaBarre and Matt Bender blocked Wilton to put the score at 5-2. But the alumni battled back and tied it with a kill from Troy Hotz. With the Warriors holding a 19-16 lead coach Mike Wilton gave everyone a chance to play, seeing time were Ryan Woodward, Eric Kalima, Matt Bender, Dio Dante, Arri Jeschke. Woodward made a pair of kills to give the Warriors a 21-18 lead and Kimo Tuyay ended the game and match with a dunk over the net.

In the earlier 5:00 alumni vs. alumni game the black team led by Pono Ma`a dominated the first game. A service ace by Ma`a put black ahead 19-10 in the first game. Former Warriors showed a bit of their old spunk as they dove, blocked and killed the volleyball. Alex Berganio won it for the Black team; they captured the first game 25-12 after Berganio easily put the ball down in White's court.

In the second game the white team, led by former Warrior Clyde Ching got their second wind as they jumped ahead to a 3-1 lead. The White team dominated the second game winning 25-18 and forcing a third game.

White continued to dominate in the third game, jumping to a fast 10-5 lead and a couple of kills by Troy Hotz. White prevailed 25-22 in game three to take the game and the match.

The Warriors start their regular season next Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30pm against Penn State in the Outrigger Invitational.
