SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Hawai'i cross country team captured first place at the 11th Annual University of San Francisco Invitational this morning, raced at Golden Gate Park.

Hawai'i totalled 19 points with the first, second, third, fifth, and eighth place finishes. Host San Francisco came in second with 46 points. Rounding out the six places were UC Santa Cruz (81), Cal State Monterey Bay (134), San Francisco State (142), and Mills College (174).

Hawai'i posted the three best times and five of the Top 8 slots.

Leading the pack for the Rainbow Wahine was Chantelle Laan, who had the only sub-17 minute time, crossing the finish line in 16:57. Laan is a freshman from London, Ontario, Canada.

Laan was followed by freshman teammates Dana Buchanan (17:32) and Monica Su (17:37). Buchanan is a former Canadian 800-meter National Junior Champion, while Su is a quality runner from Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Rounding out the other two point scores for UH are returners Robin McRobbie and Jenny Bell. McRobbie placed fifth (17:40) while Bell came in eighth (17:56).

Hawai'i hosts one of its two meets next Saturday, Sept. 20 - the Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational (4k) - at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course with the men's race beginning at 7:30 a.m., and the women at 7:50 a.m.
