AUSTIN, TEXAS - The No. 5 seed University of Hawai'i softball team defeated the No. 3 seed Arizona State Sun Devils this morning in an elimination game at the NCAA Region 3 Tournament at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.
The Sun Devils (32-25) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off UH starter Melissa Coogan (32-10). ASU's Jennifer Former hit a 1-out double down the left field line, stole third, and scored on Kara Brun's single to left center.
The Rainbow Wahine responded to the challenge in the bottom of the inning with three runs on four hits off ASU starter Ashley Werschky (10-7).
Tracie Uchima led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on April Crowell's single through the right side, and scored on Stacey Porter's double down the right field line, moving Crowell to third. After <>Trisha Ramos a pop-up to short, Marie Jackson hit a 2-run single through the right side scoring both Crowell and Porter, to make it 3-1.
ASU cut into the UH lead by adding a run in the fourth when Phelan Wright singled to right and scored on Adriana Garcia's double to the gap in right center.
UH would respond in the bottom of the inning as Denise Dahlberg tripled to the alley in right center and scored when the relay throw from ASU second baseman Jen McCard got by the third baseman allowing Dahlberg to scamper home.
Coogan allowed seven hits and struck out one nailing down her 33rd complete-game of the season. ASU's Werschky went three-plus innings allowing seven hits and all four UH runs, while striking out two. ASU reliever Desiree Serano came on in the fourth and went the rest of the way giving up a pair of hits and striking out two.
Hawai'i (40-19) advance to the 1 p.m. HST game today to battle the loser of the winner's bracket final between No. 1 seed Texas and No. 6 seed Southwest Texas State.
