Aztecs Edge Rainbow Wahine 8-7

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Wahine water polo team suffered an 8-7 loss to San Diego State in consolation-bracket play of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.

The No.7 seed San Diego State came out strong in the first half. The Aztecs were able to hold UH to just one goal, while scoring four. In the second half, the Rainbow Wahine fought back, outscoring the Aztecs 6-4. Down by two in the fourth quarter, Malia Tarayao scored a goal to get the Rainbow Wahine to within one. But despite Hawai`i's effort, the Aztec defense proved to be too strong.

San Diego State's Sandy Onweller was the high scorer of the match with three goals. Senior Karin van Hoff and Darcy Scott-Hosaka were the high scorers for Hawai`i, with two goals each.

The Rainbow Wahine now faces UC Santa Barbara in the seventh place match. The Rainbow Wahine faced UC Santa Barbara earlier this season, losing 7-5. The match is set for Sunday, 10:45 a.m. at the Avery Aquatic Center.
