UH Water Polo Slips Past San Jose State, 6-5

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Kristy Bagnell scored with 23 seconds remaining to lift the University of Hawai'i women's water polo team to its fifth consecutive victory after defeating San Jose State, 6-5, Saturday, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Aquatics Center on the SJSU campus. With the victory, the seventh-ranked Rainbow Wahine (10-11, 4-5 MPSF) moved into sixth place in the MPSF standings, a half game ahead of San Diego State.

For the second consecutive match, the Rainbow Wahine had to overcome a slow start. The Spartans led 2-1 after the first quarter but Hawai`i responded in the second, with a pair of goals by Beth Novick and the first of two goals by Bagnell.

Malia Tarayao scored the game's only goal in the third to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 5-3. The Spartans answered with two goals in the fourth, one by Beth Harberts and another by Delores Johnson to tie the match at 5 with 1:17 left. But with a man advantage, Bagnell closed out the match with her second goal.

The Rainbow Wahine finish its three-match road trip with a match against third-ranked Stanford, Sunday. UH suffered a 14-7 defeat to the Cardinal earlier this season at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, Mar. 8.
