Coogan, UH Hook No. 4 Longhorns, 5-3

FULLERTON, CALIF. - Sophomore pitcher Melissa Coogan tossed a 7-inning gem while Stacey Porter ignited a late-inning rally to spark the University of Hawai`i softball team past No. 4 Texas, 5-3, at the Titan Softball Complex during the final game of pool play earlier this afternoon.

Texas (22-5) took a 2-0 lead in the first after Lindsay Gardner got aboard on a bunt single then Wynter Turner hit a 2-run homer. The Longhorns added another run in the top of the third when Tina Boutalle reached second on a two-base error by shortstop Kate Judd when she dropped a pop-up down the left field line. Gardner then sacrificed Boutelle to third where she scored on Turner's single through the left side of the infield.

Hawai`i (15-9) got a spark in the fourth inning when Porter hit a tape-measured 250-foot homer to left center off Longhorn starter Lizi Sowers (4-1) putting some life back into the Rainbow Wahine.

UH added four more runs in the fifth inning sending nine batters to the plate.

Marie Jackson started the inning with a single to right, and Justina Kahaku reached on a fielder's choice when Texas could not force Jackson at second putting runners at first and second with no outs. Tracie Uchima then moved the runners up a base with a ground out. Noelle Izumi then brought home Jackson with the tying run on an infield single that ricocheted off pitcher Sowers. April Crowell picked up the go-ahead RBI on a fielding error by Texas second baseman Chez Sievers as Izumi scored. Porter was walked intentionally. Tara Harbert, who came into the game as a pinch-runner for Crowell, was put out at third on Judd's fielder's choice. Porter scored the final run for UH on Trisha Ramos' double.

The Longhorn offense mustered only four hits off UH's Coogan (12-3). The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking none.

Hawai`i finished pool play at 1-2 while No. 4 Texas ended the round 0-3.

The Rainbow Wahine now take on Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State in a 7 p.m. contest during the championship round of the Kia Klassic.
