Waipio, HI –Fierce competition and close points characterized the day, at the Central Oahu Regional Park as the University of Hawai`i women’s tennis team lost to the Illinois State Redbirds, 5-2. The Rainbow Wahine have a 5-9 record on the season.
The Redbirds won the first point of the day, capturing two out of three doubles matches. On the No. 2 court the doubles team of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor extended their season win-streak to six with a win over Illinois State’s Shelby Lipson and Ashley Maxwell, 8-5.
On the singles side UH won just two of six matches despite a valiant effort. On the No. 3 and 4 courts Stacy Hakikawa and Mio Fukushima posted wins for the Rainbow Wahine. Mio Fukushima has won four of her last five matches for the Wahine. In a heartbreaker match, Renata Camargo lost just her second match of the season, 6-3, 6-3 to Laura Gravino.
The Rainbow Wahine face Bradley (16th ), West Virginia (17th) , and Wyoming (19th) next week at the Central Oahu Regional Park.
