Crowell Powers UH to Sweep of Day 1 of Chevron Paradise Classic

HONOLULU - April Crowell clobbered three home runs and drove in eight runs as Hawai`i swept its two games in the first day of the Chevron Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH shutout Louisville in its season-opener tonight, starting almost two hours later than its regularly scheduled time.

Crowell went 3-for-4 against the Cardinals hitting two homers and driving in five to lead UH to an 8-0 victory.

Ace Melissa Coogan notched the complete-game shutout, her fifth of her career. She struckout four and scattered six hits along the way.

Denise Dahlberg, Stacey Porter, and Noelle Izumi each contributed two hits apiece as UH roughed up two U of L pitchers in the 12-hit attack.

In the nightcap that ended at 12:30 a.m., UH got another solid effort on the hill as sophomore Shannon Tabion went the distance limiting the Oklahoma State offense to three hits as UH routed the Cowgirls, 6-1.

Crowell picked up one hit in the contest, but it was a 3-run blast deep over the right field fence in the second inning to bring UH back from a 1-0 deficit and give them the lead for good.

Hawai`i is 2-0 in the tournament along with Washington who defeated both Santa Clara, 3-2, and Oklahoma State, 5-4, in a pair of 8-inning games. The other game of the day saw Santa Clara edge Louisville, 6-5, in 11 innings.
