UH Shuts out No. 3 California, 1-0

LAS VEGAS - Hawai`i's Melissa Coogan tossed a complete-game shutout to propel the Rainbow Wahine past No. 3 California today on the final day of the UNLV Softball Desert Classic.

Coogan (3-2), a sophomore, did not strike out nor walk a batter in the 7-inning contest. The Golden Bear offense mustered only four hits off the native of West Hills, Calif.

On the other side of the coin, California combined on the no-hitter with starting pitcher Jen Deering (4-1) suffered the loss going only 2.2 innings walking four and striking out three. Cal's Kelly Anderson went the final 4.1 innings pitching perfect ball.

Hawaii scored the game-winning run in the third, capitalizing off a Cal error. After Deering walked two and struck out two, Hawaii's April Crowell hit a soft grounder to first base, reaching on a throwing error and scoring Noelle Izumi from second. Deering walked one more batter before Anderson came in for relief, collecting the third out.

Hawai`i improves to 5-5 on the season and went 3-2 in the Classic, while California fell to 10-2 overall.

The Rainbow Wahine stay in Las Vegas to play Southern Utah Monday at 1 p.m. and then take on host UNLV 5 p.m.
