LAS VEGAS - No. 1 UCLA used a 15-hit attack to defeat Hawai`i, 10-2, in a 6-inning shortened game due to an 8-run rule in Day 2 of the UNLV Softball Desert Classic at Craig Park. In the second game of the day for UH, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back and knocked off Central Michigan, 3-1.
Against UCLA, UH's Melissa Coogan (2-2) went 5.1 innings and was touched up for 11 hits and eight runs (four earned) while striking out one and walking one.
Redshirt freshman Paula Blanning came on in the sixth but couldn't hold down the Bruins' offensive attack as UCLA scored twice off Blanning and left the bases loaded when the game was called.
In the nightcap, UH got a solid pitching effort from sophomore Shannon Tabion (2-3) who struck out eight and scattered five hits to snap her personal three-game losing streak.
Five of UH's six hits on offense were supplied by April Crowell (2-for-3), Stacey Porter (1-for-2), and Kate Judd (2-for-2). Porter's lone hit was a solo home run, her third of the season.
Hawai`i is now 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in tournament play.
The Rainbow Wahine plays its final game of the tournament on Sunday against No. 3 California at 2 p.m. PST.
