HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team rallied for a 63-56 victory over in-state rival Brigham Young-Hawaii (0-1), Monday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The exhibition game was a tune-up for the Rainbow Warriors' season opener against UC Santa Barbara, Friday, Nov. 21, however the game counted toward BYUH's record.
The 'Bows erased an eight-point halftime deficit by out-scoring the Seasiders, 38-23, in the second half while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor. Senior guard Michael Kuebler scored a team-high 18 points, including 11 after the break. Senior forward Paul Jesinskis started at center and added 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Newcomer Julian Sensley added 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
The Seasiders were paced by the guard Michael Stowell and forward Jake Chrisman, who combined for 41 of the teams' 56 points. Chrisman shot 10-of-19 from the floor and a game-high 23 points. Stowell connected on his first six shots, including four treys, to finish with 18 points.
The 'Bows, who trailed the entire first half, cut the BYUH deficit to two (40-38) in the second half after consecutive dunks by Jesinskis and one by Sensley with 12:19 remaining. Vaidotas Peciukas briefly tied the game at 43 with a 3-pointer from the wing but Chrisman responded with his second trey to put the Seasiders back ahead.
UH took its first lead of the game after a Jesinskis layup with 7:35 remaining and held the lead for good. A Sensley dunk, which brought the crowd to its feet, gave the 'Bows a 51-45 advantage. With Hawai'i holding a 58-54 lead with just under a minute to play, Logan Lee drained an NBA-range 3-pointer just before the shot clock ran out to seal the victory.
