PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i split its 22-active runners sending 12 to participate at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif, today and finished in fifth place in the women's university division 4K race.
The mostly overcast skies and temperatures in the 70s were almost ideal for the runners.
Victoria Chang, who started her collegiate career at Stanford, was UH's top finisher in 8th place overall coming in with a time of 14 minutes and 37 seconds. She was followed closely by teammate Hanna Bremler who placed 11th just seven seconds behind Chang.
UH had seven runners in the team-scoring 4K race. The other top three for UH that scored were Alethe West coming in 38th place with a time of 15:40 followed closely by Jennifer Crumley just one second behind. The final runner that scored was Robin McRobbie in 62nd at 16:19.
Jordana Whittington and Carin Patterson did not score but finished in 76th and 78th place with times of 16:42 and 16:44, respectively.
"I'm extremely pleased with the team's progress over the course of the first five weeks of the season," UH Head Coach Carmyn James said. "They are getting out stronger and enduring the pain while making steady progress."
Stanford captured the team title totaling 75 points followed by Wisconsin in second with 83. Purdue came in third with 89 points, Montana in fourth with 120, and Hawai`i in fifth with 137.
UH had the best score among the four Western Athletic Conference teams at the meet. The Rainbow Wahine nosed out SMU, who came in sixth place with 143 points. The other two WAC schools were Fresno State in 14th place and San Jose State in 15th with 380 and 408 points, respectively.
In the non-scoring 5K event, UH had five runners amongst the 85 total.
The top UH finisher was Teryn Bentley placing 14th overall with a time of 19:31. A mix-up at the finish line had her further down on the list.
A solid showing was also posted by Jodi Enomoto. The senior broke the 20-minute mark for the first time in her career coming in 22nd place overall with a time of 19 minutes and 44 seconds.
The other three runners in the non-scoring event were Leonie Sugai (26th, 20:01), Sara Verga (32nd, 20:12), and Kira Lee (51st, 21:22).
"We will be back here later in the fall," James said. "It'll be much tougher and hillier on the 6K course at the West Regional."
UH will be back at Stanford in November for the NCAA West Regional.
