HONOLULU—Fourth-ranked St. Mary’s (Md.) fought off second-ranked Harvard and seventh-ranked University of Hawai`i for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA)/Gill North American Dinghy Championship at Keehi Lagoon. St. Mary’s winning point total was 203, Harvard ended with 210 points, and Hawaii finished with 219 points.
The Seahawks were lagging in eighth place after day one, a fact that St. Mary’s head coach Adam Werblow believed turned into an advantage. “We were actually kind of lucky that we were back in the pack because nobody noticed us. On day two, our A division hung in there, while our B division went on a tear. That’s what gave us a chance to play today.”
Juniors Danny Pletsch and Dave Perkowski and sophomore Jen Vandemoer sailed for the Seahawk’s A division, while senior Brent Jansen (Weston, Mass.) and junior Galen Largay sailed in the B division.
Hawaii freshman skipper Bryan Lake and sophomore crew Jennifer Warnock dominated the A division earning 80 points, 32 points more than its nearest competitor. UH was only four points out of first place coming into the last two races of the B division, but managed only 12th and 14th place finishes to end the competition. In the B division, the Rainbows finished with 139 points with All-American Molly O’Bryan and sophomore Joey Pasqualli skippering, and All-American crew Sarah Hitchcock and junior Lindsay Peters crewing.
