EUGENE, ORE. - Hawai`i pitcher
Shannon Tabion picked up a save and loss as the Rainbow Wahine won the opener in the non-conference doubleheader, 5-4, and lost the nightcap, 5-4, at Oregon's Howe Field.
Tabion was the third UH pitcher in the first game as she faced just one batter in notching her team-leading second save after UH blew a 5-0 lead.
UH's Melissa Coogan (11-7) started the game and went 6.1 innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning. She scattered seven hits and struckout one while walking five. Oregon's Lindsey Kontra(6-11) suffered the loss.
Erin Goodwell led off the seventh with a solo home run. Coogan got Ambor Hutchison to ground out before issuing a walk to Lynsey Haij, who advanced to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on Lenn Poore's single to left.
Head Coach Bob Coolen then went to the bullpen and brought in Sheri Oronoz.
Oronoz then gave up an RBI single to Alyssa Laux scoring Haij from third and moving Laux to second.
Both runners moved up a base on Andrea Vidlund's unassisted ground out to first. Then Mari Lyn Petrick doubled home those two to pull to within one. Following a walk to Ashley Richards, Oronoz gave the ball over to Tabion, who got Janell Bergstrom to fly out to center to end the game.
Coogan got late run support from his offense as UH slugged eight hits, including solo home runs from both Oronoz, her fifth, and Marie Jackson's second.
In the second game, UH jumped all over Duck starting pitcher Connie McMurren (8-9) for three runs in the first on Stacey Porter's Western Athletic Conference-leading 15th homer. The Rainbow Wahine added another run in the second on Tracie Uchima's RBI single to center to drive home Jackson.
However, that was all the run production for UH as Oregon's McMurren allowed only four more hits the next five innings.
Hawai`i's Tabion (5-4) went the distance striking out three and walking two.
The Ducks added single runs in the second and third innings as UH committed two errors in the second and another miscue in the third that allowed two unearned runs to plate.
Oregon tied the game up with a two-run sixth. UH committed one of its five errors to allow another unearned run to score.
In the seventh inning, Oregon's Richards single to center with one out and was pinch-run for by Jessica Luciano. Vidlund then singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw home as Luciano held at third. Goodell then reached on a fielder's choice back to Tabion getting Luciano out trying to come home. Bergstrom was up next and singled to knock in Vidlund with the game winner.
Hawai`i is now 33-23 overall and Oregon is 23-25. The Rainbow Wahine's final regular-season games are WAC doubleheaders May 10 and 11 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Game times are 5 p.m. on May 10 and 2 p.m. May 11.
