HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team lost a pair of Western Athletic Conference games tonight to No. 13 Fresno State.
The first game seesawed back and forth until the Bulldogs eeked out a 6-4 victory behind the complete-game effort of the WAC's pre-season pitcher-of-the-year Jamie Southern (27-6).
UH touched up Southern for 10 hits and four earned runs, but it wasn't enough. The Bulldog bats battered both starter Sheri Oronoz and reliever Melissa Coogan for a combined 11 hits and six runs.
UH jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first on the two-run homer by Kate Judd driving home Natalie Gonzales. It was Judd's 10 dinger of the year.
However, the lead was short-lived as FSU came back with three runs in the third to take the lead highlighted by a Lindsay Fossatti's two-run shot to center.
Nevertheless, UH battled back with two more in the bottom of the inning on Stacey Porter's two-run blast to right plating Judd ahead of her for a 4-3 advantage.
But that was all UH would get as Fresno State scored two more times in the fifth and once more in the sixth.
UH's Oronoz (17-9) suffered the loss going four-plus innings allowing six hits and five runs.
In the nightcap, Fresno State's Lori Hoffman hit her first homer of the season on the very first pitch in the top of the eighth inning off starter Shannon Tabion (3-3) to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 win.
FSU's Leslie Poole (12-3) went the distance scattering four hits and allowing two runs.
FSU took the lead in the first on Fossatti's solo shot to center. That lead held until the fourth when UH tied the game on an illegal pitch.
Porter led off the inning with a single through the left side, advanced to second on Trisha Ramos' sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Poole's illegal pitch as the third base umpire Walter Yamatsuka said she went to her mouth on the mound without wiping her fingers on her clothing.
Fresno State recaptured the lead in the fifth as Tiffany Whipple doubled to left center and scored on Fossatti's double to left center.
The Rainbow Wahine came right back in the sixth as Porter hit her 12th round tripper of the year to right field.
That set up Hoffman's blast in the eighth.
Hawai`i falls to 29-19 overall and 10-4 in the WAC while Fresno State improves to 40-13 and 11-1.
