Tabion Pitches UH to a Split in First Day of Chevron Invitational

HONOLULU - Freshman right-handed pitcher Shannon Tabion tossed a complete-game, 10-2, victory over Nittaidai Team #1 from Japan to give Hawai`i a split in the first day of the Chevron Invitational. UH was blanked in their first game by No. 8 California, 4-0.

Tabion allowed only two hits and two unearned runs in the nightcap as she struckout out five and walked one in notching the win in the shortened exhibition game with one of two teams formed by Nippon Sports Science University or Nittaidai.

UH pounded out 13 hits led by second baseman Natalie Gonzales' 3-for-5 effort with an RBI and scored two runs. Teammate Stacey Porter also supplied some pop adding a triple and scored once. Trisha Ramos, back after suffering from a lower back problem for a little over a week, went 2-for-4 at the plate.

In the first game for UH, California's Jocelyn Forest threw a complete-game shutout to improve to 13-5 on the season and limiting the Hawai`i offense to two singles.

The Golden Bears got on the board in the first on Veronica Nelson's three-run homer to left center field driving in both Kristen Morley and Candace Harper ahead of her.

Cal added an insurance run in the third on the RBI double by Chelsea Spencer.

UH's Sheri Oronoz suffered the setback dropping her record to 12-6.

UH is now 20-13 on the year, with the Nittaidai stats and win not counting on the official statistics.
