HAWAII WINS TWO ON THE ROAD

STOCKTON/DAVIS, CA - The Rainbow Wahine water polo team completed a successful road trip by capturing two wins at Pacific and UC Davis.

In the first match, Hawaii (7-4, 1-1 MPSF) won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against Pacific, 5-2. The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and senior utility Karin van Hoff scored two more before the half.

The Tigers made a charge in the third period on Kristen Cockerill's two goals, but the Rainbow Wahine defense proved too tough.

Van Hoff led all players with three goals, while freshman 2M Beth Novivk and sophomore driver 2M Erin Kocher added one each.

After a 45-minute drive, the Rainbow Wahine won a thriller, 8-7, against the Aggies. Hawaii had an ejection with 41 seconds remaining in the match and an 8-7 lead. The Aggies appeared to tie the match at eight, but UH Interim Head Coach Cindy Rote claimed their ejected player was not waived in on time by the desk and forced the officials to negate the UC Davis goal and replay the sequence. The UH defense took advantage of the call, forced a steal, and ran out the clock.

"It was a tight game," Rote said. "We had a twenty second ejection that lasted twenty-five seconds. It was an awesome game and (goalie) Christa (Tackaberry) played really well."

Freshman driver Lissy Schweitzer and van Hoff led the Rainbow Wahine with two goals each, while four others scored one.

Hawaii will return home Sunday and prepare for two MPSF matches, against San Jose State March 9, and Stanford March 10. The San Jose State match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., while the Stanford match is slated for 3 p.m., at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
