HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i split its two games this afternoon the double-elimination round of the 6th Chevron Paradise Classic. UH knocked off Texas-Arlington, 6-0, in today's first game, while dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap against Long Beach State.
In the UTA game, UH got a strong pitching performance from right hander Melissa Coogan (3-1) who allowed only two hits in the complete-game effort striking out six and walking three.
She got some offense from second baseman Natalie Gonzales who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Catcher Denise Dahlberg had a solid game at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored twice. UH first baseman Stacey Porter powered her fifth homer of the season and third of the tournament.
In the nightcap, Long Beach State added single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. UH cut the margin in half in the fourth as Gonzales singled to right center, advanced to second on Tracie Uchima's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a throwing error by LBSU catcher Carrie Hamilton on Kate Judd's sacrifice bunt.
LBSU capped the scoring in the fifth on the solo home run by Arleigh Thorp to right field.
Hawai`i (8-5) takes of Texas-Arlington in the first game Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The winner will have to beat Long Beach State twice to claim the Chevron Paradise Classic title.
