DENVER--The Western Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams Friday with 10 Warriors making the first and second teams. Hawai`i placed five players on the first team, the same number as Boise State and Fresno State, the conference's two other bowl-bound teams.
Boise State swept the major awards as Brock Forsey and Quintin Mikell were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, while Dan Hawkins was voted WAC Coach of the Year.
Hawai`i's first-team selections included wide receiver Justin Colbert
, guard Vince Manuwai, linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, safety Hyrum Peters
and punter Mat McBriar.
Center Lui Fuata, quarterback Timmy Chang, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga, linebacker Chris Brown and cornerback Kelvin Millhouse were named to the second team.
Sophomore receivers Britton Komine and Chad Owens earned honorable mention.
The 10 honorees were the most for UH since 1989 when 11 players were named all-WAC. The five first-team members were the most since 1999 when UH landed six players on the team during June Jones' first year as head coach.
Colbert, who has started 36 straight games for the Warriors, earned all-WAC honors for the first time. He ranks second in the WAC and 18th nationally in receptions per game (6.25) The senior also leads the team in all-purpose yardage (1,056) and is the school's all-time leader in receptions (195).
Manuwai was a preseason all-WAC selection and has lived up to his billing as an All-American candidate. The senior tri-captain leads the team in pancake blocks (53) and has given up just one sack in 549 pass attempts this season.
Tinoisamoa leads the team in tackles (113) and is fourth in the WAC in tackles per game (9.5). The senior tri-captain led or co-led the Warriors in total tackles in seven games, including a phenomenal 19-tackle effort versus Alabama on Nov. 30.
Peters is one of just two non-seniors on the 25-member first team. The junior has picked off four passes this season and has returned three interceptions for touchdowns. He is also second the team in tackles with 77.
McBriar was recognized as the conference's best punter, despite not getting enough attempts this year to qualify for conference or national statistics. The senior from Australia owns a 44.1 average in 2002, including five punts of more than 60 yards and 11 punts pinned inside the 20-yard line.
Brown, a first team selection last year, has battled injury for most of the 2002 season, yet still ranks third on the team in tackles at 76. Although he has started every game at middle linebacker, Brown has filled in defensive tackle due to injuries and schemes.
Timmy Chang has continued to light up the scoreboard in his second year as the Warrior's starting quarterback. The sophomore leads the WAC and is fourth in the country in total offense (325.9 ypg). Chang, the school's career leader in passing yards (8,054) and total offense (7,952), has led the team to comeback victories at Fresno State and over Cincinnati during its 9-3 march this season.
Fuata, has started all 12 games this season for the Warriors and is the team's smartest lineman in terms of technique and execution. The senior recorded 23 pancake blocks, before bowing out with an knee injury versus Alabama.
With his size and ability, Millhouse has been the team's best cover corner. The junior co-leads the team with four interceptions and has recorded 51 total tackles. Three of his four interceptions have led to touchdowns, including two critical picks in UH's 31-21 win at Fresno State.
First-year player Isaac Sopoaga has filled in for the injured Lui Fuga in a big way this season. His ability to clog the lanes has forced increased attention from opposing lineman. The junior leads all lineman with 63 tackles.
