KANEOHE, OAHU - The University of Hawai`i (Manoa) posted a very strong showing at the UH Cross Country Sprint Invitational earlier this morning in Kaneohe. It is UH's final regular-season meet of the fall. The meet took place on the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course located on the U.S. Marine Corps Base on the Windward side of Oahu.
The Rainbow Wahine took top honors in the locals only college meet as UH placed five runners in the Top 8. UH, with a full squad, defeated the Division II schools for the third time in three chances this year when running with a full squad. In second place was HPU with 52 points followed by BYU-Hawai`i with 66 and Chaminade at 94. Hawai`i-Hilo did not calculate a team score as only three of its runners finished the race (five is needed for a team score).
Individually, the women's race was won by UH's Victoria Chang who sprinted to a time of 10 minutes and 33 seconds in the three-kilometer course. Normally, the women run a 5K layout, but this morning the women shortened it to 3K while the men's teams ran a 5K.
Taking second place in the women's race was HPU's Sayuri Kusutani at 10:46 followed closely by UH freshman Hanna Bremler at 10:53.
"This was a good tune-up meet for all of our programs as we head into our conference championships in the next couple of weeks," UH head coach Carmyn James said.
The men's race was won by Hawai`i Pacific, with the Sea Warriors placing five in the Top 10 for a total of 24 points. Hawai'i-Hilo took second place with 63 points followed closely by BYU-Hawai`i and Chaminade totaled 65 and 69 points, respectively.
For the men, HPU took Nos. 1-3 at the top led by Christian Madsen, who took first place in the 5K event with a time of 16:24. Robert Tyler and Chris Larson finished in second and third with times of 16:39 and 16:51, respectively.
