Freshman Bauer Leads 'Bows to 14-10 Win Over Alumni

HONOLULU -- Behind a strong performance by Ricky Bauer, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team defeated the UH Alumni 14-10 at the Les Murakami Stadium.

Freshmen pitchers Ricky Bauer and Jason Piepmeier led the way on the mound, combining for 7 and 2/3 innings pitched while giving up just three earned runs. Bauer, who pitched 5 and 1/3 of those innings, also had four strikeouts and earned the win. 2000 Rainbow pitcher Jeff Coleman got the loss, giving up two runs in just one inning of work.

The Rainbow bats were led by preseason all-WAC pick Gregg Omori, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, three runs scored and one home run. Tim Montgomery added a 2-for-3 performance with a home run and two runs scored.

The alumni team jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second inning before the Rainbow pitching staff stepped up, while the 'Bows responded with 12 runs between the second and fifth inning to put Hawai`i up for good.

The alumni were led by Kenny Harrison, who hit 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. The Alumni also got homers out of Corey Ishigo, Patrick Scalabrini, Dean Hashimoto and Ron Nomura.

Hawai`i will now prepare for the Florida State Seminoles, who come into the Les Murakami Stadium on Wednesday to start a four game series. The Seminoles are currently ranked second in the country and were up 6-0 in the second inning at UH-Hilo before rain halted their season opener. The game will conclude on Sunday, January 27, followed by either one nine inning or two seven inning games. The starting pitchers are tentatively set as Bryan Lee for the Rainbows going against the Seminoles' Trent Peterson.
