'Bows and Beavers Renew Friendly Rivalry

The University of Hawai`i men's basketball team returns to regular season competition, Monday, when the Rainbow Warriors host Oregon State of the Pac-10. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH and Oregon State have met 26 times since the series began in 1940. However the teams' last meeting occured 19 years ago, on Dec, 21, 1984, when the 'Bows defeated the Beavers, 81-64 at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

Hawai'i is coming off a 69-67 exhibition victory over the EA Sports All-Stars, Dec. 7, and haven't played a regular season game since losing to Dayton, Nov. 26, in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. In addition, this is UH's first home game since its season opener, Nov. 21, a span of 24 days.

Oregon State (3-2 before its game against Willamette, Dec. 12) visits Honolulu for the first time since 1984. The Beavers are the 12th winningest program in Division I basketball, compiling 1,517 victories since 1902.

Game Update
Former UH coach Red Rocha (1963-73) starred for OSU from 1945-47...Rocha was 2-7 coaching UH against his alma mater...former UH coach Eugene “Luke” Gill (1930-41) was the older brother of famed OSU coach Amory “Slats” Gill, of whom the school’s home arena is named after...OSU’s 49-39 victory on Apr. 8, 1940 was UH’s second game ever against a college opponent...that game pitted the Luke brothers as coaches against one another...Hawai‘i is 25-107 (.189) all-time against current members of the Pac-10...UH’s last victory over a Pac-10 foe was against Oregon, Dec. 30, 1999 in the finals of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic...the last time UH lost consecutive home games was Dec. 30, 2000 (Tennessee) and Jan. 11, 2001 (UTEP)...UH head coach Riley Wallace has never coached against Oregon State.

This Week's Opponent: Oregon State Beavers
The Beavers return one starter and seven lettermen from a team which accumulated a 13-15 overall record last season including a 6-12 mark and a sixth place finish in the Pac-10 under first year head coach Jay John. Guard Lamar Hurd, who started all 28 games as a true freshman last season, is averaging 7.0 points and 4.3 assists per game. Junior David Lucas is leading the team in scoring (18.3) while shooting a team-leading 49.2 percent from the field. The Beavers, who feature no seniors on the squad, were picked to finish last in the 10-member Pac-10 conference.
