Robyn Ah Mow: Through the Years

When Dave Shoji closed out his Hall of Fame career after 42 years leading the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball team, the program turned to one of its most distinguished players to take on the role of head coach. A former All-American and three-time Olympian, Robyn Ah Mow returned to Manoa first as an assistant coach under Shoji before moving up to head coach in 2017. Over the next nine years, Ah Mow added five Big West titles and seven NCAA Tournament appearances to the program’s storied legacy. 

• Feb. 20, 2017: Robyn Ah Mow is officially announced as the third head coach in the history of the University of Hawai‘i women’s volleyball program, succeeding retiring head coach Dave Shoji.

• Aug. 25, 2017: Ah Mow makes her debut as UH head coach against Marquette during the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

• Sept. 1, 2017: Ah Mow secures her first win as a collegiate head coach with a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-13, 25-13) over Western Carolina during the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.

• Dec. 1, 2017: The ’Bows win their final five games of the regular season to finish second in the Big West race. UH earns an NCAA Tournament berth and close Ah Mow’s first season with a first-round loss to Illinois in Seattle, Wash.

• Nov. 22, 2019: UH clinches the Big West regular-season championship with a sweep over Long Beach State at the Stan Sheriff Center. It marks Ah Mow's first conference title as head coach, and she is subsequently named the Big West Co-Coach of the Year.

• Dec. 6-7, 2019: Ah Mow leads the Rainbow Wahine to wins over Northern Colorado and San Diego in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center. After advancing to the NCAA Regionals, Ah Mow is named the AVCA Pacific North Region Coach of the Year.

• Aug. 27, 2021: After the 2020 season is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rainbow Wahine open the 2021 season with a sweep of Fairfield. UH’s win in an empty Stan Sheriff Center ends a 623-day hiatus between matches for the ’Bows.

• Nov. 26, 2021: Following the canceled 2020 season, the Rainbow Wahine secure their second consecutive Big West regular-season title with a 3-1 home win over CSUN. Ah Mow earns her second Big West Coach of the Year award.

• Oct. 29, 2022: Ah Mow reaches the 100-win milestone with a five-set victory at UC Davis.

• Nov. 25, 2022: Hawai‘i captures its third straight conference crown with a five-set win at UC Santa Barbara. Ah Mow is named Big West Coach of the Year for the third straight season.

• Nov. 25, 2023: In the inaugural year of the OUTRIGGER Resorts Big West Women's Volleyball Championship, Ah Mow leads UH to the title with a sweep over Long Beach State in the tournament final in Long Beach, Calif., securing the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

• Nov. 30, 2024: Ah Mow crosses the 150-win threshold late in the season and guides the ’Bows to their second consecutive Big West Championship crown with a 3-2 victory over Cal Poly in the title match in Irvine, Calif. UH earns the program’s 42nd NCAA Tournament berth and extends its streak of NCAA appearances to 31 consecutive seasons. 

• April 29, 2026: After nine seasons and 165 total wins, Ah Mow formally announces her decision to step away from her position as head coach of the Rainbow Wahine.
