David Matlin Timeline
March 25, 2015 - Named the 23rd Athletics Director of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. Matlin brings more than two decades of sports and entertainment marketing and management experience, including stints with ESPN Events, the Houston Astros and a previous five-year tenure with UH.
April 9, 2015 - Hires his first head coach at UH as Eran Ganot fills the men’s basketball head coaching vacancy. Ganot leads UH to the NCAA Tournament and a school-record 28 wins in his first season and becomes the school’s second all-time winningest coach in his seventh season in Manoa.
Nov. 27, 2015 - Hires former Nick Rolovich as the head football coach to revive a program that endured five straight losing seasons. In four seasons, Rolovich propels UH to three bowl bids and a Mountain West divisional championship.
Feb. 29, 2017 Former UH All-American and Olympic medalist Robyn Ah Mow is hired to replace the legendary Dave Shoji to lead the decorated UH women’s volleyball program. Ah Mow continues UH’s winning tradition with five straight NCAA bids and three consecutive Big West titles.
Sept. 6, 2017 - A 10-year multimedia rights agreement is announced with IMG allowing for new revenue opportunities for the Athletics Department and the school's 21 sports programs.
August 28, 2018 - Negotiates a partnership with Hawaiian Airlines that makes the air carrier the official airlines for the university's 21 varsity athletic programs that drastically reduces travel cost for UH teams as well as cost subsidies to conference opponents.
June 28, 2019 - UH ranks No. 68 in the final 2018-19 Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup standings for its highest finish in nearly a decade.
Dec. 4, 2019 - Nick Rolovich is named Mountain West Coach of Year, joining Robyn Ah Mow (women’s volleyball), and Michele Nagamine (women’s soccer) as one of three fall sport coaches who earned conference coach of the year honors.
Jan. 15, 2020 - Named to the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Committee and witnessed the Warriors capture back-to-back national titles in the sport.
Nov. 12, 2020 - The improved marketing of UH facilities resulted in the first long-term significant naming rights commitments in program history, highlighted by an unprecedented sponsorship, scholarship and stewardship deal for the naming rights of the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Dec. 24, 2020 - The Warrior football team captures the 2020 New Mexico Bowl after successfully navigating a COVID-ridden season. UH was one of just 17 FBS teams on the year to make it through its schedule without cancellation or postponement.
Jan. 25, 2021 - After months of planning and development, partnered with online counseling service, Talkspace, to provide mental health resources to all Rainbow Warrior and Rainbow Wahine student-athletes, above and beyond what was made available to the general student population at the University.
June 28, 2021 - The Rainbow Warrior men’s volleyball team captures the first of two straight NCAA championships, bringing home the university's first NCAA team title in 35 years.
May 8, 2021 - UH earns its highest rating in the 15-year history of the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate with a score of 986 for the 2020-21 season. It marked the seventh consecutive year UH improved its multiyear score from the previous year.
Sept. 4 2021 - With eight months to find a suitable playing venue after the shuttering of Aloha Stadium, UH plays its first-ever football game on-campus as the Rainbow Warriors defeat Portland State at the refurbished Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
Feb. 15, 2022 - The department holds a blessing in celebration for the multi-million dollar renovations at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, highlighted by a new entry plaza, locker room, training room, coaches' offices and upgraded dugout.
May 7, 2022 - The Rainbow Warrior volleyball team captures its second straight NCAA title with a sweep of conference rival Long Beach State.
May 29, 2022 - UH places second in the 2021-22 Dennis Farrell Big West Commissioner's Cup standings, its highest finish since joining the conference in 2012.
Oct. 14, 2022 - Capped by the “Wahine on the Rise—The Celebration" event, UH raises more than $700,000 to support Rainbow Wahine athletics programs during a year-long commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
Jan. 4, 2023 - Announces his retirement after nearly eight years as Athletics Director - the fifth-longest tenure at the school’s position.
