Student-Athlete Academic Services Website
Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS), part of the Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Education, provides the academic advising and support that students often need to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
In order to ease the transition to the university, incoming freshman and transfer students are required to attend an Orientation Program prior to the start of the fall semester. The program familiarizes new students with basic degree requirements, registration procedures, NCAA and conference rules and regulations, and campus resources.
The SAAS advisors get to know their student-athletes well, assisting them in not only their academic development, but also their personal development. They are a specialist faculty who work closely with Dr. Ron Cambra, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Education, and the Athletics Department staff in a collaborative effort to support student-athletes academically. Also, they facilitate student-athletes in developing an academic plan towards graduation.
The SAAS staff provides special programs and services to meet individual needs, including tutoring and academic mentoring to the approximately 500 student-athletes that participate in University of Hawai‘i’s 21 intercollegiate sports.
Not only do they have an exceptional staff, but also an exceptional academic center where each student-athlete has the opportunity to reach academic success.
The Nagatani Academic Center (NAC), constructed in 1999, was originally funded by the late UH booster Bob Nagatani. It was designed to offer student-athletes an accessible environment where they can concentrate on their academic pursuits. After its $4.5 million facelift in 2013, the NAC is equipped with three computer labs, offices for the academic advisors and tutors, study rooms and meeting rooms.
With required study hall hours for all incoming freshman and transfer students, the NAC is a great resource to take advantage of. It is open each semester from 8-9:30 p.m., and serves as a space for study halls and tutoring sessions. Also, it houses the offices of SAAS, Student Services, and Compliance staff.
Student-Athlete Academic Services strives to ensure that each student-athlete is provided with the best chance of earning a degree. Their successes are reflected in the 75-percent graduation rate of student-athletes, which is ranked in the top 25 among Division I public institutions.
