Men’s Golf Makes Annual Appearance At Western Intercollegiate

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will make its 15th consecutive appearance in the Western Intercollegiate, presented by Titleist. The three-day tournament runs Monday, April 14 through Wednesday, April 16 at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.
 
The Golf Channel will once again provide three hours of live coverage per day of the tournament, airing 4:00-7:00 p.m. PT (1:00-4:00 p.m. HT) each day.
 
Each year, the Western is considered one of the nation's top collegiate golf tournaments. This year's field includes seven teams ranked in the Top 50 – No. 18 San Diego State, No. 21 Arizona, No. 22 Pepperdine, No. 29 BYU, No. 34 UNLV, No. 36 Oregon, and No. 42 Stanford.
 
This year's 14-team field also includes host San José State, California, Nihon (Japan), Tennessee-Chattanooga, UC Irvine, and Washington.
 
Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 18 on each day, at the par-70, 6,615 yard course with tee times beginning at 8:46 a.m. PT on Monday and Tuesday and 8:00 a.m. PT on Wednesday. The format is play-six, score-five.
 
In its 78th year, the Western is the longest running college golf tournament west of the Mississippi. Pasatiempo is an award-winning course known for its masterful Alister MacKenzie design. The Western features a rich history with a former champion lists that includes Johnny Miller, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O'Meara, Duffy Waldorf, Bobby Clampett, Patrick Rodgers, Mark Lyle, Ken Venturi, and Scottie Scheffler.
 
UH's contingent includes Tyler Ogawa, Dane Watanabe, Garrett Takeuchi, Anson Cabello, James Whitworth, and Nathan Szpakowicz. In addition, Josh Hayashida will be competing as an individual.
 
Ogawa, a senior from Honolulu, has competed in the last three Westerns, with a high finish of  62nd in 2023. He also placed 51st in 2022 and 86th last year. Hayashida competed in two Westerns, tying for 62nd in 2023 and 72nd last year. Among the rest of the group, only Watanabe has played in a Western Intercollegiate, placing 89th last year.
 
Under head coach Scott Simpson, UH's best finish at the Western was 13th in 2023.

Following the Western Intercollegiate, the Rainbow Warriors will compete in the Big West Conference Championship, April 27-29 in La Quinta, Calif.
