HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i Athletics has announced the 40
th class of the UH Sports Circle of Honor which includes
June Jones (football), the
2010 softball team,
James "Jim" Kalili (football),
Ann Miller (journalist), and
Cindy Luis (journalist).
The official enshrinement of the Class of 2024 will occur at the Green & White Celebration scheduled for Sunday, May 5 at The Royal Hawaiian Resort. For more information and table sales, visit

Jones is the eighth football coach enshrined while Kalili is the 36
th football player. The softball team is the 13
th overall team to be inducted and first women's team other than women's volleyball's four teams. Miller and Luis are just the seventh and eighth media members, respectively, and first two print reporters honored.
The Circle of Honor was established in 1982 to recognize individuals and teams who have contributed to the growth, history and tradition of UH Athletics. The total number of inductees in the Circle of Honor is now 136 individuals and 13 teams, including this year's honorees. Plaques honoring the individuals and teams are anchored on the inner walls surrounding the main concourse of SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Biographies of the Circle of Honor Class of 2024 inductees are listed below:
June Jones … Winningest coach in the modern era of Hawai'i football with 76 victories in nine seasons (1999-2007) … led UH to six bowl games including the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl … coached three 10+-win seasons including a 12-0 regular season during the 2007 campaign … his 1999 team recorded the biggest turnaround in NCAA history with a 9-4 record and shared the Western Athletic Conference title …named National Coach of the Year in 1999 by The Sporting News, CNN/SI and American Football Coach/Schutt Sports … … his teams captured two WAC titles (1999 & 2007) and finished runner-up twice (2002 & '06) … his Run-and-Shoot offense produced record-breaking quarterbacks
Timmy Chang (NCAA's all-time passing leader) and Colt Brennan (Heisman Trophy finalist), who combined for 45 NCAA records … coached five All-Americans, 52 all-conference performers and 16 NFL Draft picks … played quarterback at UH from 1973-74 … started coaching career at UH as a graduate assistant in 1983.
2010 Softball Team… First UH team to qualify for the Women's College World Series … finished the season with a 50-16 record … upset top-seeded Alabama in the Super Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on a walk-off home run by Jenna Rodriguez … hit 158 home runs to set the NCAA single-season record … two NFCA All-Americans — Melissa Gonzalez (3B, First Team) and Kelly Majam (CF, Second Team) … swept all major WAC awards — Jessica Iwata (Player of the Year), Stephanie Ricketts (Pitcher of the Year), Kelly Majam (Freshman of the Year), and
Bob Coolen (Coach of the Year) … captured the WAC regular season title with a 19-1 conference record and won the WAC tournament … set several other school single-season records including hits (578), runs scored (488), home runs, and RBI (449) … captains were Katie Grimes, Amanda "AJ" Tauali'i, Kanani Pū'u-Warren and Traci Yoshikawa.
James "Jim" Kalili … The offensive guard was one of the most dominant linemen in school history ... four-year letterman from 1967-70 … named a second-team Little All-American by the Associated Press and honorable mention Little All-American by Kodak in 1970 … a first-team Little All-Coast pick in 1970 by United Press International … named team's Most Inspirational Player, Best Offensive Lineman, and Mr. Hustle awards in 1970, the same season he helped the Rainbows to a 9-2 record, which was the best mark against an all-collegiate schedule … 1969 Western States College Division All-America first team … selected to the 1971 Hula Bowl … named Best Offensive Lineman in 1968 … one of 11 players chosen to the all-time UH team in 1973 … following UH career, signed as an NFL free agent with Washington … played one season for the Honolulu Hawaiians of the World Football League … also lettered on the UH volleyball team for three seasons and coached the team in 1972.
Ann Miller… Sports reporter for the
Honolulu Advertiser and
Honolulu Star-Advertiser for 34 years from 1980-2014 … primary beat writer for women's volleyball and covered all three of UH's NCAA championships in 1982, '83, and '87… pioneer in Hawai'i sports journalism and was among the first female reporters in the
Advertiser's sports department … co-author of "Wahine Volleyball: 40 Years Coaching Hawai'i's Team" … also covered the golf scene in Hawai'i and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta … also covered high school sports early in her career, including boys and girls basketball … founding member of the Association for Women in Sports Media and later served as its board chairperson and whom its service award is named after.
Cindy Luis… Sports reporter for the
Honolulu Star-Bulletin and
Honolulu Star-Advertiser for 39 years from 1981-2020 … first female in the
Star-Bulletin's sports department … in 1999, became sports editor and was the first woman to head a sports department in the state of Hawai'i … beat writer for several UH sports, including men's and women's volleyball … twice recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as national print journalist of the year … covered UH's five NCAA volleyball championship teams (WVB - 1982, '83, '87 and MVB - 2021 and '22) … also served as assistant sports editor and weekly columnist for the newspaper.
