Women's Volleyball Sweeps Notre Dame To Wrap Up Spring Schedule

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept Notre Dame in its final Spring match of 2024, 25-20, 25-23, 25-15 on Thursday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine went 3-0 in its Spring matches defeating UNLV on Tuesday, Colorado State on Wednesday and the Fighting Irish on Thursday night.

Caylen Alexander led Hawai'i with 11 kills and Paula Guersching put down eight to lead the UH offense to their second-straight sweep in as many nights. Jackie Matias recorded 19 assists and Kate Lang added 10 while Tayli Ikenaga scooped up a match-high 14 digs while dealing a team-best three service aces.

Jacyn Bamis, UH's only middle blocker this spring, played the entire game in the front row.  She tallied seven kills with a team-high three blocks.

For the third straight game, UH played all 11 of its players. On Thursday, all six hitters put down at least one kill.

The two teams traded blows to start the match. A 7-to-1 UH scoring run gave the 'Bows a 13-10 lead which they held until Notre Dame scored four of five points to knot the score at 18-18. UH and UND traded a couple of side-outs, but the 'Bows pulled away scoring the final four points for a 25-20 win.

In Set 2, Hawai'i led by as many as five (17-12) but Notre Dame rallied for six-straight points to take an 18-17 lead. A UH 4-to-1 run gave the 'Bows to match point. A UH service error and a Fighting Irish double block brought them within a point at 24-23. But a Notre Dame service error gave UH the 25-23 win.

The Rainbow Wahine raced out to a 6-1 lead to start the third set which forceed an early Notre Dame timeout. Later UH extended their lead to nine via a 5-0 run that pushed UH's lead to 21-12 and UH sealed the sweep, winning the third set, 25-15.

The Fighting Irish were led by Sydney Palozzolo's 11 kills. Lucy Trump had a team-high three blocks wand Lily Fenton dished out 13 assists for the match.

Prior to the match, the coaches had pre-determined that if one team swept the other, the two would play an extra set for the exhibition match. In the extra frame, UH trailed through much of the set, but battled back late and then held off the Fighting Irish for the win, 27-25. In the extra set, Bamis added eight kills on 14 swings with no errors for a .571 hitting percentage. Stella Adeyemi came through with five kills.

The three matches marks the end of the Rainbow Wahine's competitive match schedule. The official 2024 Fall season begins in late August with the full roster.
