Women's Volleyball Falls to TCU In NCAA First Round

EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team's season came to an end on Thursday with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 loss to TCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Mathew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore..

Playing in Eugene for the second straight postseason and the third time in the last six seasons, the Big West champion Rainbow Wahine (21-10) battled all match but were unable to find their groove offensively, hitting just .171 for the match. UH was led by Caylen Alexander's nine kills. Alexander finished her historic junior campaign with 611 total kills, the program's highest single-season total since Jamie Houston had 623 in 2007 and the most under the current 25-point set format.

Seniors Kate Lang and Tayli Ikenaga concluded their stellar careers donning the Green and White. Lang posted her 51st career double-double, dishing out 27 assists and coming up with 12 digs while also finishing off four kills of her own. Lang, who was the primary starting setter all four years of her UH career, finished with 4,544 total assists to rank third in the UH record books. She averaged 10.42 assists per set to finish sixth in program history.

Ikenaga, was also a primary starter at libero all four years of her career, popped up a match-high 16 digs to bring her career total to 1,368 digs. She closed her career fifth in the UH record book in total digs and her average of 3.35 digs per set ranks third.

UH ended the season in the NCAA Tournament for the 31st consecutive season and 42nd overall.

TCU (22-7), an at-large selection out of the Big 12 and the fifth seed in the Upper Left Quadrant of the NCAA Tournament bracket, was led by Melanie Parra who put down 24 kills with just five errors for a .302 hitting percentage.

Although the Rainbow Wahine led the Horned Frogs, 61-51 in digs, TCU led UH 50-37 in kills, .297-.171 in hitting percentage and 10-4 in blocks.

In the first set, UH went up 6-4 on an ace by Ikenaga and a block by Jacyn Bamis and Stella Adeyemi. TCU pushed ahead with a 6-0 run to go up 11-7. The Horned Frogs maintained control through the end of the set before ending it with a block to take the lead in the match.

TCU again surged ahead to take a 13-9 lead in the second set. But UH fought back, scoring six of the next eight points to knot the score at 15-15. The two teams traded sideouts and the score was tied at 18-18 when the Horned Frogs scored the final seven-straight points to win the second set, 25-18.

In the third set, Hawaii went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 9-7 lead that prompted a Horned Frogs timeout. TCU came back firing with five straight points to see-saw ahead, 12-9. The 'Bows would not back down, scoring five of the next six points to leapfrog into the lead at 14-13. The teams were tied three more times, the last coming at 22-22, but TCU scored the last three points to close out the match. The loss marked the first time the 'Bows were swept in the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 1997.

The Rainbow Wahine finish the year as Big West champions for the fifth consecutive season after winning their second-straight Big West Championship last week.
