HONOLULU — Hawai'i's duo of
Caylen Alexander and
Kate Lang capped a milestone week by claiming two of the Big West's women's volleyball weekly awards on Monday.
Alexander and Lang reached career landmarks while helping the Rainbow Wahine pick up conference victories at CSU Bakersfield last Tuesday and against CSUN at home on Sunday. Alexander was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season while Lang earned her third Setter of the Week award of the season and the 14
th of her career.
Alexander put away 56 kills, averaging 6.22 per set, while posting a .331 hitting percentage in UH's two victories. Alexander led the Rainbow Wahine with 28 kills in 51 attempts to hit .431 and served up three aces in a four-set win at CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday. She also became the 22
nd member of UH's 1,000-kill club in the win. She then had 28 more kills on 70 swings in a five-set victory over CSUN on Sunday. She posted double-doubles in both matches with 14 digs at CSUB and 15 against CSUN.
Alexander has finished with 20-plus kills in 11 matches this season. She leads the Big West and ranks third in the nation with 5.23 kills per set and 5.76 points per set. Her 418 total kills ranks second among NCAA Division I players.
Lang dished out 96 assists while also posting double-doubles in both of UH's wins. The senior had 52 assists and 12 digs at CSU Bakersfield while operating a UH attack that hit a collective .317 on Tuesday. She had 44 assists and 17 digs against CSUN on Sunday. She averaged 10.67 assists and 3.22 digs per set for the week. In the win at CSUB, she became the fifth UH setter to surpass 4,000 career assists. She's 13th among active players with 4,084 career assists.
In Big West matches, Lang leads the conference with 11.05 assists per set while running an attack hitting a league-high .266. Her overall average of 10.17 assists per set ranks second in the Big West.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-7, 7-3 Big West) enter the week tied with Cal Poly for second in the conference standings, trailing league leader UC Davis (9-1). UH continues the homestand by taking on UC Santa Barbara (10-12, 6-4) on Friday and Cal Poly (14-7, 7-3) on Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
