HONOLULU – Nearly a dozen former University of Hawai'i men's volleyball players will play professional volleyball either overseas or in the United States this upcoming season.
Recent Rainbow Warriors
Cole Hogland,
Dimitrios Mouchlias, and
Jakob Thelle will begin their first seasons as a professional. Hogland signed with the Sakai Blazers of the V.League 1, Japan's premiere volleyball league. Mouchlias will play for the SWD Powervolleys Düren of the Volleyball Bundesliga, the highest level of volleyball in Germany. Thelle joined Cucine Lube Civitanova, which competes in Serie A of the Italian Volleyball League.
Former UH teammates Joe Worsley and Patrick Gasman will play for Chaumont Volley-Ball 52 in France this season. Gasman is in his second season with the club after beginning his career with Vôlei Funvic Natal in Brazil while Worsley joins Chaumont after two seasons with SVG Lüneburg, where he played with his brother former UH libero Gage Worsley.
Gage Worsley is in his second season with the German club, that also featured a third former Warrior, Maui's Colton Cowell in 2022-23. Cowell, who recently joined Paris Volley of Ligue A, also spent time with the Las Vegas Ramblers of the National Volleyball Association where he was teammates with former Warrior
Kyler Presho. Presho joined the Ramblers after his first pro season in Germany with Energiequelle Netzhoppers KW-Bestensee in 2022-23.
Former national player of the year Rado Parapunov begins his first season at Shahdab Yazd in Iran after two successful seasons with Serbia's Vojvodina NS Seme Novi Sad, where he received the Best Opposite award in the Serbian Super League in 2021-22 and Most Scorer award in 2022-23.
Taylor Averill begins his seventh pro season and recently signed with Shanghai Volleyball in China. He played the past two seasons in Poland for Indykpol AZS Olsztyn. This summer, Averill competed with the U.S. National Team at the Volleyball Nations League, where ironically they finished runner-up to Poland.
Stijn van Tilburg, who enters his fifth professional season, has yet to announce his club. Van Tilburg also competed in the VNL with Netherlands this summer. He spent his last two pro seasons in Germany with Helios Grizzlys Giesen in 2020-21 and WWK Volleys Herrsching in 2022-23.
Max Rosenfeld played his first pro season with Nordenskov UIF in Denmark last season and has also yet to announce his plans for 2023-24. In addition, former Warrior Austin Matautia and Brandon Rattray, who both started their careers at UH before transferring to UCLA, are playing professionally. Matautia signed with TSV Unterhaching in Germany while Rattray is playing with the San Diego Wild of the NVA after three seasons overseas in Spain and Germany.
