Eight Student-Athletes Named CSC Academic All-District

HONOLULU – Eight University of Hawai'i student-athletes - three male and five female - have been selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic At-Large All-District Team. 

 In order to be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his or her current institution. All student-athletes who meet the requirements can be named to the at-large all-district team, however schools are limited to just five male and five female honorees. At-large candidates come from a pool of more than a dozen NCAA-sponsored sports, which includes men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's water polo and men's and women's golf at UH. 
 

MALE HONOREES
Kana'i Akana (Men's Volleyball), Senior
  • Finance major
  • Primary serving substitute for UH's 2023 national runner-up team
  • Member of back-to-back national title teams
  • 2022 NCAA Elite 90 Award recipient as the player with the highest grade point average in the NCAA Championship

Tyler Ogawa (Men's Golf), Sophomore
  • Business major
  • Competed in nine tournaments
  • Finished with a 74.0 scoring average
  • Posted four rounds under par and two in the 60s

Jakob Thelle (Men's Volleyball), Senior
  • M.S. Urban & Regional Planning; B.S. Global Environmental Science 
  • 2023 AVCA National Player of the Year 
  • A four-time AVCA All-American and led UH to the NCAA championship match four times
  • A two-time academic all-Big West selection


FEMALE HONOREES
Kaylee Glagau (Beach Volleyball), Junior
  • Social Work major
  • A two-time AVCA beach volleyball All-American
  • Also twice named Big West Pair of the Year with partner Brooke Van Sickle
  • Earned academic all-Big West and UH scholar-athlete honors

Hyeonji Kang (Women's Golf), Sophomore
  • Exploratory Business major
  • An all-Big West first team selection
  • Led the team with a 73.8 scoring average
  • Competed in all nine tournament with three Top 10 finishes

Mayumi Umezu (Women's Golf), Sophomore
  • Management Information Systems major
  • Named to teh all-Big West second team
  • Earned Big West All-Tournament team honors after tying for fourth at the championship.
  • Posted the team's best single round (67) and 54-hole total (212) at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

Emma van Rossum (Water Polo), Senior
  • B.S. Information and Computer Sciences; B.S. Psychology
  • Awarded the 2023 Jack Bonham Award, UH athletics highest individual honor
  • Named to 2023 watch list for the Cutino Award, presented to the nation's most outstanding player
  • An AWPCA Academic All-American and academic all-Big West honoree

Brooke Van Sickle (Beach Volleyball), Graduate Student
  • M.S., Marketing; B.S. Economics
  • A two-time AVCA beach volleyball All-American
  • Also twice named Big West Pair of the Year with partner Kaylee Glagau
  • UH's Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2022 and a two-time academic all-Big West honoree.
