Men’s Volleyball Extends Win Streak To 20 With Sweep

HONOLULU – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team extended its win streak to 20 matches after a straight-set win over Concordia Friday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-19.

Playing without All-American setter Jakob Thelle for the second consecutive match due to load management, the Rainbow Warriors (11-0) were still able to extend their home win streak to 23 matches and regular season home win streak to 28 straight. Brett Sheward started at setter for the second consecutive night and 'Eleu Choy got the crowd going with his play on defense.

As a team, UH hit .382 for the match with eight blocks and three aces. Three Warriors recorded double-digit kills led by outside hitter Spyros Chakas, who tallied 14 kills, hitting .462. Outside hitter Chaz Galloway added 11 kills while opposite Dimitrios Mouchlias posted 10 kills and three blocks.

But the player of the match was Choy, who set a new career-high with 11 digs while also adding two assists. The Honolulu native was also a perfect 18-for-18 in reception attempts.

Uriel Batista had 10 kills for the Golden Eagles (4-7).

Teams traded leads for the first half of Set 1. UH took a 17-15 advantage after a kill by Galloway. The lead was 20-17 after a Galloway solo stuff block and the Warriors scored four of the final five points to take the opening set. UH hit .419 in the frame led by Chakas' seven kills.

Hawai'i scored the first five points of Set 2 behind the serving of Chakas. The lead was 10-2 after a 5-1 run and the Warriors went ahead 15-7 at the media timeout. A Mouchlias-Cole Hogland double-block gave UH a 17-9 advantage before head coach Charlie Wade brought in the reserves to close out the set.

UH went on a 5-1 run to jump out to a 14-8 lead in Set 3 and extended the advantage to nine at 18-9 following an ace by Voss. The Eagles closed to within five twice but the Warriors sided-out to take the set and the match.

Hawai'i continues its five-week homestand with a two-match set against Long Island, Wednesday, Feb. 22 and Friday, Feb. 24 at SimpliFi Arena.
