Women's Volleyball Starts Road Trip With Sweep At Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif.—After a four week homestand, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (6-5, 3-0 Big West) returned to the mainland and recorded a sweep over Cal State Fullerton (8-4, -2 BWC), 25-20, 25-15, 25-13. Junior middle blocker Amber Igiede posted match-highs of 13 kills and four blocks on Friday night at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif..

For the 10th time in 11 matches, Igiede posted double-digit kills. Igiede hit .522 (14-2-23) for the match and led two other Rainbow Wahine with 10+ kills. She had eight of her 14 kills in the first set alone.

Junior outside hitter Riley Wagoner finished a dig shy of her third-straight double-double with 10 kills and nine digs with a pair of blocks. Wagoner hit for a career-high .455 and had no errors for the first time since her freshman year as a reserve. It marked Wagoner's seventh double-digit kill match of the season.

Freshman pin-hitter Caylen Alexander recorded her second-straight and sixth overall 10+ kill match adding 10 kills while hitting .350 (10-3-20). In the first set, Alexander recorded her 100th kill after coming into the match with 97.

Sophomores Kate Lang and Tayli Ikenaga continued their stellar, steady play. Lang was one dig short of a double-double herself with 30 assists and nine digs as she directed the offense to a .318 hitting percentage (45-10-110).  Ikenaga notched her ninth overall and fifth-straight double-digit dig match of the year with a match-high 12. She also added two assists and a service ace and for the third consecutive match she did not have any serve receive errors.

For the third straight match, Hawai'i's defense held their opponent to under a .135 hitting percentage (.133) and did not allow an opposing player to post more than nine kills. The Titans' Julia Crawford came into the game averaging 3.00 kills per set, but the 'Bows held her to just three kills for the match. Statistically, Hawai'i led Cal State Fullerton across the board in kills (45-28), assists (36-26), service aces (6-0), digs (44-27), and blocks (6.0-2.0). It marked the fourth-straight match that UH has out-blocked their opponents and just the fifth time overall.

In Set 1, the Titans jumped out to an early 10-6 lead via a four point scoring run. Hawai'i  responded with a 7-to-1 run in which UH tied then overtook CSF. UH would hold off the Titans the rest of the way taking Set 1, 25-20. Hawai'i hit .425 in the frame led by Igiede's eight kills.

UH's Kendra Ham went on an early 5-to-0 serving run to begin Set 2 with a 5-1 lead. Cal State Fullerton would close to within two points twice. But the 'Bows never led the Titans get closer and led by as many as 12. The Titans staved off three set points before UH was able to close out the set winning, 25-15.

With UH leading 8-7 in the third set, Hawai'i rattle off 14 straight points with Ikenaga serving to extend their lead to 23-9. CSF scored four-straight points late but a kill by Chandler Cowell ended their rally and a service ace by Kennedi Evans ended the match. It was Evans' Rainbow Wahine debut after transferring from Utah this Fall.

Lyla Trayler led the Titans with nine kills and Elizabeth Schuster came up with 11 digs. Four players had one block apiece.

Hawai'i is now 46-0 against Cal State Fullerton and have won the last nine matches at Titan Gym by a sweep. In Honolulu, CSF has given UH all it can handle, taken the last two meetings in Honolulu to five sets.

Next up, the Rainbow Wahine will head west to take on Long Beach State on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 4:00 p.m. HT. The match will be played at the Walter Pyramid.
