Women's Volleyball Edges Out CSU Bakersfield in Five

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (10-5, 7-0 Big West) held off CSU Bakersfield (5-15, 2-6 BW) in a momentum-swinging, five set match, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14, 18-25, 15-8 on Friday night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.. With the win, Hawai'i remains the lone unbeaten team in The Big West at 7-0 and sets up a clash for first place against Cal Poly (9-8, 6-1 BW) on Saturday in San Luis Obispo. The Rainbow Wahine ended the match with four players with double-figure kills and three with 10+ digs. Reigning Big West Offensive Player of the Week Riley Wagoner finished a kill shy of posting 20-kills for the second-straight match.

For Wagoner, it marked her ninth-straight and 11th overall double-digit kill match this season. She put down a match-high 19 while hitting at a .310 clip (19-6-42). She also added four digs, three blocks and a service ace while recording her 500th career dig in the third set.

Amber Igiede pounded 17 kills for her 13th straight 10+ kill match while hitting .583 (17-3-24). She also was in on a match-high eight blocks (two solo) with a pair of service aces and five digs to fill her stat line. Like Wagoner, Igiede also hit a defensive milestone as the middle blocker came up with her 200th career dig in the first set.

Current BW Freshman of the Week Caylen Alexander finished with 11 kills for her ninth double-figure kill match while recorded a block. Tiffany Westerberg was also part of the double-figure kill club tallying 10 kills to go with two digs and three blocks.

Setter Kate Lang posted her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 52 assists and 12 digs. The UH offense hit .306 (64-23-134) for the match under her direction. She also had a service ace and three blocks. Lang was one of three Rainbow Wahine to record 10+ digs. Libero Talia Edmonds had her second-straight double-digit dig match wearing the different color jersey with 16 digs, six assists, and a service ace. Kendra Ham who came off the bench as a serving/defensive specialist through the first two sets, started the final three sets as a pin-hitter playing all the way around and finish with 10 digs (her fourth 10+ digs match of the season) to go with three kills, two aces and a block.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead to start the match and led wire-to-wire to go up 1-0 in the match. CSUB led by as many as six at 17-11. UH tried to rally and close to within one at 19-18 after a 5-1 run. UH would stave off two set points, but the 'Runners held off Hawai'i to take Set 1, 25-23. Wagoner and Alexander both had four kills apiece in the frame.

UH was able to take its first lead of the match early in the second set at 5-4, but both teams were unable to shake each other off as there were eight ties and two lead changes by the time the score was 8-8. UH scored two straight on a double-block by Igiede/Wagoner followed by a Kendra Ham ace to take a 10-8 . Later, UH went on a 3-0 run to go into the media timeout up 15-11. Hawai'i would end the frame scoring the final six points to even the match at a set apiece taking Set 2, 25-15.

Hawai'i took their momentum into the third set as the 'Bows jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead. Just as the 'Runners did in the first set, UH led Set 3 from start to finish. Hawai'i would lead by as many as 12 at 24-12. CSUB survived two set points before Tiffany Westerberg put down a kill to end the set, 25-14.

Momentum swung back to the Roadrunners in Set 4 as CSUB raced out to a quick 8-3 lead and kept their foot on the gas pedal, never looking back. Hawai'i closed to within three twice, the last time coming at 13-16. But after a CSUB timeout, the Roadrunners scored three-straight points as their lead ballooned back to six points at 19-13. CSUB would roll to take the fourth set, 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set.

Hawai'i took a 5-1 lead to start Set 5 and soon went up 10-5 as CSUB called timeout. The two teams would side out a few times before the 'Bows scored the last three-straight points for the win, 15-8.

The Rainbow Wahine out hit CSUB 64-to-46 in kills and .306-to-.194 in hitting percentage. UH also had a 59-to-45 advantage in assists, 7-to-4 in service aces, 56-to-41 in digs and 11.0-to-8.0 in blocks. For the fifth time in the last seven, the UH trio of Igiede, Wagoner, and Alexander all posted 10+ kills. In Sets 2 and 3, UH sided out at an 80% clip and at 87% in the fifth set alone. For the Mānoa Roofing Company, it marked just the fourth match this season with double-digit blocks.

Hayley McCluskey led the Roadrunners with 14 kills. Laura De Pra had a team-high 21 assists while Paige Calvin led the 'Runners with nine digs. Hana Makonova had a team-best five blocks.

Hawai'i has a quick turnaround as they bus to San Luis Obispo tonight to face the Cal Poly for the league-lead on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. HT in the Mott Athletics Center.
