SEATTLE, Wash.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (22-8, 18-2 Big West) saw its season come to an end in the NCAA second round, falling to 15
th-seed Washington, 25-16, 25-14, 25-12. Hawai'i was unable to find a way to slow down the Huskies as they powered past Hawai'i on Saturday night at the Alaska Airlines Arena. With the win, Washington advances to the Regional round of 16.
Hawai'i was able to tally just 25 kills while hitting .134 in the match, while Washington put down 46 kills and had a .379 hitting percentage—the highest allowed by UH this season. The Huskies out-blocked UH, 8.0-to-4.0, with seven of those blocks all coming in the second set. UW's serving kept UH out of system all night as they struggled with their passing. It was just the second match this year in which UH did not have a hitter with at least 10 kills. It was also Hawai'i's lowest scoring output for a match in the rally scoring era and the least amount of points scored since UH had 40 in a four set loss to Nebraska in the pre-rally scoring era.
Sophomore middle blocker
Amber Igiede led UH with team-highs of eight kills, a .467 hitting percentage (8-1-15) and four blocks.
After trading leads early in the first set, the Huskies would go up by five points via a 7-to-1 run for a 13-9 lead, forcing UH into an early timeout. Washington would eventually pull away to take the first set, 25-16. Although Hawai'i hit for a high percentage in the set (.346 – 11-2-26), they were unable to slow the Huskies down as they had seven more kills than UH (18-to-11) in the frame.
Washington kept serving tough and pounding away, but five-straight blocks is what capped a 6-to-0 UW run that extended their lead to 10-3. The Huskies scored in bunches to pull away to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 win in Set 2.
Hawai'i spotted UW five points before being able to score their first point. Washington did not let up, as Washington led the final set from start to finish, 25-13.
UW was led by Claire Hoffman, who put down a match-high 20 kills while Marin Grote had a match-high six blocks. Ella Mae Powell had a match-high 11 digs.
With the loss, three players concluded their Rainbow Wahine careers. Defensive specialist
Janelle Gong is foregoing playing her senior season as she is graduating this December. Gong had by far her best season as a Rainbow Wahine, appearing in 28 of 30 matches this season with 147 digs and nine service aces
Senior outside hitter
Brooke Van Sickle finished her collegiate career, posting seven kills with three digs and a block. She finished her Hawai'i career with 593 kills, 525 digs, 58 service aces and 105 total blocks in her two years in Mānoa.
UH's only four-year senior, middle blocker
Skyler Williams had four kills, a block and a dig in her final match as a Rainbow Wahine. She finished with 483 career kills and 279 career blocks.
The 'Bows have lost in the second round to Washington in four of five trips to the Seattle subregional since 2010.
