HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will host nearly 30 collegiate teams next week in a pair of tournaments on O'ahu and Maui. Beginning on Monday, the Rainbow Warriors will host the 2
nd annual Hoakalei Country Club Invitational, Oct. 25-26 and followed by the 7
th annual Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 29-31 at the Royal Kā'anapali Golf Course.
The 16-team Hoakalei CC Invitational features four Top 100 teams – San Diego (#66), Louisiana Monroe (#79), Loyola Marymount (#81), and Texas State (#88). Also competing are Abilene Christian, Army West Point, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Louisiana, UC San Diego, and Utah Valley.
The Ernie Els designed course, which opened in 2009, will play at a par-72 and 7,444 yards. The 54-hole tournament will run over two days and begins with a 7:30 a.m., shotgun start each day.
The inaugural Hoakalei CC Invitational was played in 2019 with East Tennessee State capturing the team title. Twelve of this year's teams played in the inaugural event, including the host Rainbow Warriors who placed 20
th.
Following the Hoakalei CC Invitational, UH will travel to west Maui for the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, which they've hosted each year since 2014. Last year's event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
This year's tournament features a 13-team field highlighted by 10
th-ranked Kansas. Other Top 100 teams include Nevada (#33), Boise State (#42), Denver (#78), and Colorado (#80). Making up the rest of the field are Air Force, Connecticut, CSUN, Gonzaga, Loyola (Md.), Sacramento State, and Wyoming.
The teams will play 18 holes each day beginning with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start at the par-71, 6,700-yard Royal Kā'anapali Course. The course was built in 1962 and is one of only two courses in Hawai'i designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.
The tournaments close out the fall season for the Rainbow Warriors, whose best full-field finish was ninth place at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. UH last competed in the Bill Cullum Invitational two weeks ago, where freshman
Tyler Ogawa carded the low round of the season with a 4-under 68 in the opening round.
