UH Athletics Supports Voter Registration Initiative

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Athletics and in partnership with Every1ne Hawai'i, have re-launched the voter initiative, "YOU RUN 808," which encourages voter education, voter registration and voter participation.

In addition, UH Athletics has set a goal of 100% participation of eligible student-athletes registered to vote for this year's general election. In a friendly competition, UH's 21 sports teams will challenge one another once they reach 100% participation among its eligible voters.

Since the start of the academic year, the department has provided student-athletes with information about the voting process and the importance of civic engagement and promoting social change. The deadline to register to vote for the general election in the state of Hawai'i is October 5.

As part of the UH Athletics' "'Bows Together" theme, the "YOU RUN 808" initiative, originally launched in July for the primary election, was designed to encourage students across the state to register to vote. The turnout for the primary election in the state of Hawai'i was the highest ever recorded with more than 400,000 ballots cast.

Every1ne Hawai'i is a Hawaii 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation comprised of nextgen influencers, formed to empower and activate Hawaiʻi's next generation. Recognized widely for their efforts to procure and distribute two million masks statewide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the group is pivoting back to its original programmatic intent for 2020: engaging kamaʻāina in the electoral process for this critical upcoming election.
