Beyond the Lines: Athletics Director David Matlin

HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i Athletics Director David Matlin joined host Rusty Komori on ThinkTech Hawai'i's Beyond the Lines episode.

Hawai'i-born Matlin discussed his unique background and road to becoming state's only Division I Athletics Director. He also explained the philosophy and culture within the sports programs.

"It's a winning with integrity culture," Matin said. "It's winning in the classroom, it's winning in the community, it's supporting each other, because if you don't win with integrity it's really not winning. What we're trying to do is develop young men and women who are going to be future leaders and great fathers and mothers and friends."

Matlin was also asked about the success of UH's programs prior to the cancellation of the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic among other topics including the football program, facility upgrades and the athletics staff.

"All of our employees are so critical to our success," Matlin said. "At every staff meeting, I mention two things. First came from Pastor Wayne Cordeiro and it's try to get 1% better a day or try to do one thing better each day. And the other thing is so often we try to catch people doing things wrong. I want us to catch people doing things right and praise them and create that type of culture. It's important that we encourage each other because as you do that, that's how we change the department and change the world."
