'Bows Kitchen presented by Safeway, is a new University of Hawai'i Athletics Department video series featuring coaches, staff, and student-athletes making their favorite recipes in their own kitchen.
In this week's special episode of 'Bows Kitchen, University of Hawai'i Athletics Director David Matlin participates in the Hawai'i AD Grindz Challenge featuring his colleagues from the state's other intercollegiate athletic programs – UH Hilo's Patrick Guillen, Hawai'i Pacific's Sam Moku, and Chaminade's Bill Via – cooking up their favorite recipes.
The friendly cook-off began earlier in the week when Guillen, who prepared his mother's fried chicken recipe, challenged Matlin. In this episode, Matlin replied "on behalf of Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior nation, challenge accepted." He then demonstrates his famous "Chicken As Good As It Gets" recipe.
"It's my go-to recipe for family parties and friends gatherings," Matlin said. "I've had this recipe for about 10 years and I tweaked it throughout the years and this is where we're at now."
The challenge originated as a way for the ADs – not known for their cooking prowess – to have some fun, bring a smile to people's faces, and thank the community and fans of the Rainbow Warriors, Vulcans, Sharks, and Silverswords
"On behalf of our 500 student-athletes, our coaches and our staff, I want to thank all of our fans and our entire Warrior community for all you do for us," Matlin said. "Also I want to thank all the first responders and all you're doing for the community. You are our true heroes."
At the end of the show, Matlin challenges Moku. "And now I want to throw out a challenge to former University of Hawai'i defensive back and current Hawai'i Pacific University Athletic Director Sam Moku. Sam you're on the clock!" The challenge concluded with Villa, the dean of Hawai'i ADs, who is retiring in June after 12 years as the director of athletics.
