HONOLULU—The No. 22 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (14-3, 5-2 Big West) swept UC Riverside (5-13, 1-6 Big West), 25-17, 25-18, 25-12 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i had three players record double-digit kills, led by freshman middle blocker
Amber Igiede who recorded a match-high 11 kills. Junior middle blocker
Skyler Williams was in on a match-high seven blocks while senior setter/outside hitter
Norene Iosia posted her seventh-straight double-double with 17 assists and a season- and match-high 19 digs in the match that took just an hour and 26 minutes.
Igiede hit .714 for the match, with just one error in 14 attacks. It marked the fourth time this season that Igiede has led UH in kills. She also was in on three blocks and had a dig. It was also the fourth time that she has recorded double-digit kills in a match.
Williams led UH's defense which out-blocked the Highlanders, 10.0-to-6.5. Williams added five kills .
For Iosia, it was her 11
th double-double of the season and the 55
th of her career. She continues to climb the UH career record books. She moved up to tie former UH-standout Nikki Taylor with her 117
th career service ace. Iosia also moved up to No. 13 with 1,039 career digs, passing Mahina Eleneki who had 1,025 career digs. Iosia remains at No. 9 in career assists with 2,882 career assists.
Both
Hanna Hellvig and
McKenna Ross both contributed 10 kills apiece. Hellvig also added eight digs and a block, while Ross had three digs and two blocks for the match.
A seven point run in the first set with Hellvig serving for six of those points pushed the Rainbow Wahine to take an early 8-1 lead to start the match. But four-straight UH hitting errors allowed the Highlanders to close to within three at 9-6 forcing an early timeout by the 'Bows. Hawai'i would go on a 6-to-1 run to extend their lead to 22-13. UH would never trail in the set and took a 1-0 lead, winning the first set, 25-17.
The second set was much closer with 11 ties and four lead changes. But the 'Bows closed out the frame strong, scoring 10 of the last 12 points to take Set 2, 25-18. UH would lead the match 2-0.
The third set was all Hawai'i.
Kyra Hanawahine had a five-point serving run—which included a pair of aces to give UH a 12-5 lead. Hanawahine would finish the match with a career-high three service aces. Later,
Bailey Choy would go on a six point run to extend UH's lead to 19-5. UH would cruise to take Set 3, 25-12.
The Rainbow Wahine out-hit the Highlanders, .242-to-.022.
UC Riverside was led by Ayla Fresenius who had seven kills and Tara EAton had eight digs. Mogan Kline had a team-high nine assists while three players all had two blocks apiece.
Friday night was Dig Pink night in recognition of breast cancer awareness.
The Rainbow Wahine will have a day before their next conference match against UC Davis on Sunday, Oct. 20. UH will be celebrating the Stan Sheriff Center's 25
th Anniversary that night.
