Box Score (html) H-TV VIDEO: Highlights of Hawai'i vs. Oregon StateVIDEO: Video Recap/Post-Game Interview (courtesy of OCSports) HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 Big West) swept Oregon State (1-2, Pac-12) in convincing fashion to capture the 2015 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine defeated the Beavers, 25-20, 205-19, 25-11 in front of a crowd of 6,107.
Nikki Taylor buried a game-high 15 kills capping a stellar weekend en route to earning all-tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.
In this week's three matches, Taylor led all players with 52 kills in 100 attempts with 19 errors for a .330 hitting percentage. She also was in on a team-high 15 blocks and was third on the team with 27 digs. She is the ninth UH player to win Most Outstanding Player honors in the 11-year history of the tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine started the first set of on a roll, scoring the first four points and later jumping out to a 9-4 lead. But the Beavers rallied to eventually knot the score at 9-9. Both teams were tied twice more before UH started to inch-worm away to win the set, 25-20. Taylor paced the 'Bows smacking six kills in the first set while
Olivia Magill was an efficient 4-for-5 in kills with a solo block and three block assists.
In the second set the 'Bows cruised to a 25-19 win. Setter
Tayler Higgins spread the ball around with five different players registering kills in the set. Then in the fourth, the 'Bows dismantled the Beavers, dominating to a 25-11 set win to end the match.
Tai Manu-Olevao finished strong, pummelling six kills in eight attempts in the final set. Manu-Olevao rebounded with a solid performance on Sunday, tying her career-high and with a team-high .471 hitting percentage with eight kills in 17 attempts and no errors.
Magill finished her night with nine kills and a .438 hitting percentage to conclude a strong tournament for the middle hitter. Magill also combined for six blocks and had one solo block. She and Higgins both were named to the all-tournament team.
As a team, Hawai'i hit for a .350 hitting percentage--their highest thus far this season--while their defense held OSU to just a .125 hitting percentage on the night. The Rainbow Wahine had 42 assists to Oregon State's 29 and the 'Bows out-blocked the Beavers 11.5-to-3.0. UH also out-dug OSU, 53-to-46 with Higgins leading the 'Bows with 11 and
Kalei Greeley and
Savanah Kahakai coming up with 10 digs apiece.
All 15 UH players who were suited up got into the game. It was the first career appearance on the Teraflex for freshman outside hitter
Casey Castillo.
Oregon State's Mary-Kate Marshall led the Beavers with 12 kills while Lila Toner popped up a team-high 10 digs.
Hawai'i has won eight of the last nine Chevron Invitational titles. Last year, Arizona State went undefeated to take the crown.
Up next for the 'Bows is the Hawaiian Airlines Volleyball Classic, Sept. 4-6. Iowa, American and UCLA will all be coming to Honolulu to battle for the tourney title.
