Softball Sweeps Doubleheader to Start Kama‘aina Tournament

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team opened their fall Kama'aina Tournament with a pair of wins. The Rainbow Wahine shut-out Chaminade, 13-0 and then defeated the Alumnae Team , 14-2 on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hawai'i's Brittany Hitchcock and Naomi Monahan combined for the seven inning shut-out. Hitchcock earned the win, allowing just one hit with no walks and six strike outs in 5.0 innings of work. Monahan threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit with two walks and three strike outs.
 
Hawai'i got on the scoreboard first. With one out, freshman third baseman Nicole Lopez drove a single to the left-centerfield to start things off. Senior rightfielder Keiki Carlos then drove a line-shot over the centerfielder for a double to easily score Lopez from second for the early, 1-0 lead.
 
The 'Bows batted around the order and erupted for seven  runs in the bottom of the third. Once again, it was Lopez who started the rally with a single to left. Later, Lopez scored on a double to the right-centerfield gap by Heather Morales . Ulu Matagiese followed with a single and Tayana Mata then hit another single to left to drive in pinch runners Alia Monges and Courtney Hiruko. Sarah Muzik kept things going with an RBI single to right to score Mata. Kanani Aina Cabrales then laced a single to left. A walk to Jennifer Iseri, loaded the bases. Lopez then drove in Iseri with a sacrifice fly to left to give UH an 8-0 lead after three innings.
 
In the fourth, UH tacked on four more runs. The 'Bows loaded the bases and then Dori Ann Sugai drew a walk to force the first run across. Aina Cabrales drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left that was caught in foul territory. Iseri followed with a two-RBI double drilled to the left-centerfield gap. The Rainbow Wahine added one last run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Naomi Monahan.
 
Chaminade used three pitchers in the loss. Luana Moreno took the loss, throwing the first 2.1 innings. She gave up six runs on eight hits with two strike outs. Kayla Higuchi threw one-plus innings allowing six runs on five hits with four walks. Chelsea Camello threw the final 2.2 innings. She gave up just one run on five hits with two walks and three strike outs.
 
Six Rainbow Wahine had two hits to lead the 'Bows. Lopez, Morales, Matagiese, Mata and Rachael Turner all went 2-for-3 with Rachel Lack going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Kanani Aina Cabrales earned the win, firing 5.0 innings. She allowed two runs on one hit with three walks and three strike outs. Jennifer Iseri closed the game, tossing the final 2.0 innings. She did not allow a hit and fanned one batter.
 
Almost 40 Hawai'i graduates participated in this year's Alumnae Game. The Alumnae got off to a great start, posting two runs in the top of the first. Kelly Majam Elms led off with a walk moved to second on an error and scored on a Jenna Rodriguez single. Later, Rodriguez crossed the plate after a throwing error to take the early 2-0 lead.
 
The current UH squad got one run back in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Lack. Lack had a good at-bat, battling off several pitches by Alumnae pitcher Kate Robinson before launching a line drive over the leftfield fence.
 
In the second inning, after a brief rain delay, Hawai'i tallied three unearned runs to over take the Alumnae. Sarah Muzik led off with a strike out swinging, but an errant throw by the catcher allowed her to reach first safely. After two quick outs, Morales launched a two-run  bomb over the net in left field. Lack followed with a single and she came around to score on a base-hit by Matagiese.
 
Hawai'i added four more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Breanna Ojala led off with a double to leftfield. Iseri pushed her to third with a sacrifice  bunt and Muzik drove her in with a single up the middle. Lopez then picked up her fourth hit of the day with a sinlge to left and was driven home by Keiki Carlos' hit to left. Lopez struck again, when she blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning to give UH a 12-2 lead.
 
The Rainbow Wahine capped their scoring with two runs in the sixth. UH loaded the bases again and a walk to Ojala drove in the first run and the second run came on an error on a muffed throw at the plate.
 
The Alumnae's Kate Robinson took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and three strike outs. UH's Naomi Monahan also pitched for the Alumnae. She threw two innings, allowing eight runs on six hits with two walks and three strike outs. Jenna Rodriguez threw the final inning, allowing two runs on one hit with two walks and two strike outs.
 
Lopez led UH going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Lack was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
The Kama'aina Tournament continues on Saturday morning with a slate of four games on tap. Hawai'i wilil face UH-Hilo at 10:00 am. The Vulcans will then take on Chaminade at 12:00 p.m. UH-Manoa will play the final two games against UH-Hilo and Chaminade at 2:00 and 4:00 pm respectively.
